Andrew B Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 We are a couple who will travel from Kyoto Station to Osaka Station on Monday 8 January. We plan to book the Special Rapid Service train, but are unsure whether it has space for our suitcases (1 suitcase each - they are average size suitcases). Is there somewhere on Special Rapid Service trains for us to put our cases? Thank you! Andrew Quote
Andrew B Posted December 7, 2023 Author Posted December 7, 2023 Also: is it possible to book online in advance for tickets on a Special Rapid Service train which does not have reserved seating? Or must we simply buy tickets at the station that day before the train arrives? Quote
Japan Station Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 Hello Andrew, The Special Rapid Service between Kyoto and Osaka is a commuter type train. It doesn’t have a dedicated luggage space or reserved seats. Outside of rush hour times you can bring reasonably sized luggage on this train. Limited Express Haruka runs from Kyoto to Kansai Airport with a stop in Osaka. This train has reserved seats and luggage space. https://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/travel/shopping/access/train.html Quote
Japan Station Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 For Special Rapid you can pay base fare by a paper ticket or IC card. For Haruka express you need a reserved seat ticked from the ticket office. It can be purchased on the day of travel or earlier. Quote

Eve Posted September 12 Posted September 12 Hi, does a reasonably sized luggage exclude a big luggage? Thank you. Quote

Baggage with total combined dimensions (height + width + depth) of 160 cm or greater is considered oversized. We highly recommend using a delivery service or selecting a train with dedicated luggage space if your are travelling with oversized luggage. Quote
Shinta A Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Hi Sirs, Since there are no dedicated space for luggage on the special rapid train,if I take 1 large luggage onboard the special rapid train, should I book 2 tickets, one for myself, another one for the luggage? Quote

It doesn’t work that way. The Special Rapid Train is a commuter service with a subway-style car layout and no reserved seats. Therefore, you cannot purchase a ticket specifically for your luggage. There are other trains you can take from Kyoto to Osaka that have dedicated luggage space and reserved seats, like Haruka Airport Express. This will cost more than Special Rapid and require purchasing a reserved ticket at the ticket office. 1 Quote
