Kanazawa to Takayama what to do if Nohi bus is sold out?

Dear Japan Station and forum users,

We are a party of 7 and cannot find a bus on November 16th from Kanazawa to Takayama that is still open (not sold out). Do you know if they will add another bus?

I looked into also possibly renting a car, but the mini vans are not large enough to accomodate 7 people plus 5 carry on luggage.

Worst case scenario is to take the train from Kanazawa to Toyama and then take either bus or train to Takayama.

Please advise what do you think would be best remaining option.

Thank you,

John

Dear John,

I’m sorry to hear about the difficulties you’re facing with transportation from Kanazawa to Takayama. Here are some suggestions that might help you find the best option for your group:

1. Train via Toyama:

Kanazawa to Toyama: Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen or a local train. The journey is about 20 minutes by shinkansen.

Toyama to Takayama: Transfer to the JR Hida Limited Express train. This scenic route takes approximately 90 minutes.

This option is reliable, comfortable, and offers beautiful views of the Japanese countryside. If you have a Japan Rail Pass, it covers this entire route.

2. Alternative Bus Routes:

Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go: Check for bus availability to Shirakawa-go. From there, you can take another bus to Takayama.

Toyama to Takayama: Since you’re considering going to Toyama, check if there are bus services from Toyama to Takayama with available seats.

3. Renting Multiple Vehicles:

If one minivan isn’t sufficient, renting two smaller cars might be an option. This would require two drivers but could accommodate your group and luggage.

4. Luggage Forwarding Service:

Use Japan’s Takkyubin (宅急便) service to send your luggage directly to your accommodation in Takayama.

This would free up space in a rental vehicle or make traveling by train more comfortable.

5. Consult a Local Travel Agent:

A travel agent in Japan might have access to options not readily available online and can assist in arranging transportation for larger groups.

Given that the train journey via Toyama is both scenic and efficient, it might be more than just a last resort—it could enhance your travel experience. The route offers stunning views of the Japanese Alps and might be a highlight of your trip.

Safe travels!
