What's the difference between Osaka Station and Shin-Osaka Station?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I’m fairly new to this, so apologies if this question seems basic.

I’m planning to buy train tickets from Tokyo to Osaka, but I’ve run into some confusion. Our hotel is near Dotonbori, in the Shimbashi Namba area.

When looking at tickets, I see options for traveling from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka, and then another leg from Shin-Osaka to Osaka Station. Can someone explain the difference between these stations? I was under the impression there was only one main station in Osaka, so I’m a bit lost. Also, which one is closer to Dotonbori?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome to the world of train travel in Japan! Your question is a great one, and it's something that can be a bit confusing at first.

In Osaka, there are several major stations, and it’s understandable why you might be a bit confused. Here’s a breakdown:

  1. Shin-Osaka Station: This is where most of the Shinkansen (bullet trains) from Tokyo arrive. It's located north of central Osaka and is the primary hub for high-speed rail travel into and out of the city. However, Shin-Osaka is not the best station if you want to get to Dotonbori directly.

  2. Osaka Station (Umeda area): This is a major station located in the heart of the city’s Umeda district. It's a central hub for local trains, but it’s still not the closest to Dotonbori.

  3. Namba Station: This is the station you want to focus on. Namba is the closest major station to Dotonbori, located just a short walk away. However, Namba Station is not served by the Shinkansen.

Travel Tips:

  • Shin-Osaka to Namba: After you arrive at Shin-Osaka Station via Shinkansen, you can transfer to the Midosuji subway line, which will take you directly to Namba Station in about 15 minutes.

  • Osaka Station to Namba: If you were to go to Osaka Station (Umeda), you’d need to take a local train or subway to reach Namba, which would take about 10-15 minutes.

Best Option:

For your trip, you'll likely purchase a ticket from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka. Once you arrive at Shin-Osaka, you can easily transfer to the subway or another local train to get to Namba Station, which is very close to Dotonbori.

Another option is to take a taxi from Shin-Osaka directly to your hotel in Shimbashi Namba. It is not cheap (around 3,000 to 5,000 yen) compared to subway, but very convenient and stress-free, especially if you are travelling with luggage.

This route is quite straightforward and popular among travelers staying in the Shimbashi Namba area. I hope this clears up your confusion, and have a great trip!
