We are planning to visit Sapporo from Tokyo this Dec 29th until Jan 5th, we are 18 adults and 5 children and we have JR Passes. Please advise, how to get to Sapporo? And what will be the best time of departure from Tokyo Station so we can have the fastest route to Sapporo? Thanks

To get to Sapporo from Tokyo you will need to take a shinkansen train from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and connect there to another train to Sapporo.

You can find the details here: http://www.sapporostation.com/hokkaido-shinkansen-traveling-from-tokyo-to-sapporo/

New Year's holidays are a busy travel time in Japan. It may be a good idea to reserve your train tickets as soon as you arrive in Japan. With the Japan Rail Pass you don't need to pay anything extra but you do need to make reservations in advance at any JR ticket office.
