  2. The trains run all day on January 1st. The few days around the New Year are a busy travel season in Japan.

The tickets go on sale one month in advance. You can make reservations at any JR ticket office in Japan. We recommend booking your tickets with reserved seats as early as possible after your arrival in Japan.

If you are from: United States, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia or Thailand you can also use this app to make reservations online in advance: https://smart-ex.jp/en/

It depends on how many days you are planning to stay and how many trips on JR you are going to take.

You can use our Japan Rail Pass calculator to find a pass that will work for you: https://www.japanstation.com/japan-rail-pass-value-calculator/

Can anyone please tell me the best place to get a taxi to drop me at Tokyo station to catch the Narita express? I will have a bicycle and other luggage. Thanks

Any taxi drop off area at Tokyo Station will be about the same distance. Narita Express departs from one of underground platforms. Be prepared to take a few escalators underground. The path to Narita Express is clearly marked from all entrances.

  5. There is dedicated luggage space in every car on Narita Express that can accommodate large suitcases.

It is much easier to transfer at Shinagawa station. Tokyo station is busier and more complex to navigate.

There are also luggage delivery services that will send your large suitcase from Narita directly to your hotel in Kyoto. Look for “luggage delivery” on Arrivals level at Narita.

  6. There are two types of Nankai Airport Express trains:

    1. The Airport Express commuter train. No reservations are required for this train and the journey time is about 44 minutes. Boarding time is not specified on tickets. IC cards like ICOCA can also be used.

    2. The Rapi:t limited express service between Kansai Airport Station and Namba Station. All seats on this train are reserved. Tickets are issued with a boarding time and seat number.

You can find more information about Nankai Airport Express trains here: https://www.osakastation.com/the-nankai-airport-line-the-airport-express-rapit-services-for-kansai-airport-namba/

  7. Generally, you can use a locker for a maximum of three days. After the initial first day charge you will need to pay for extra days when you collect your luggage. The locker will not open until you add the payment for extra days. After three days your property will be transferred to another storage area. If your property is not claimed from storage within 30 days it will be disposed of.

Information about lockers and luggage storage in Shinjuku can be found on this page: https://www.shinjukustation.com/shinjuku-station-lockers-luggage-storage-and-delivery/

Some hotels will store your luggage for a few days if you are staying there. You can also use a delivery service to send your luggage directly to your next destination or to the airport.

  8. 1. The last airport express train from Kansai Airport departs at 23:55. The ticket office will be open until that time.

    2. Nankai Namba station is about 5-10 minute walk from Hotel Monterey Grasmere. https://goo.gl/maps/b9m43hQtCq3cqcbq6

Is there an office in the Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto station where I can activate my JR voucher for a rail pass?  I would like to take the Shinkansen to somewhere on Honshu.

You can activate your JR Pass at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto station JR Ticket office (open every days from 9:00 to 19:00)

  10. Kyoto to Nara route is served by JR and Kintetsu railways. JR service from Kyoto to Nara is a commuter local or rapid train that doesn't have reserved seats. Kintetsu offers both local and limited express trains. Limited Express tickets with seat reservations can be purchases one month in advance at Kintetsu ticket office.
